1. Introduction

Energy: Getting Started

Online Component Learning Goals

  • Understand that energy is neither created nor destroyed - it is only ever stored (as potential energy) or transferred (as kinetic energy).

  • Understand and identify kinetic and potential energy in simple systems

  • Understand that there are different types of energy

  • Understand that energy can be converted from one type to another type of energy

Key Terms

Kinetic Energy, Potential Energy, chemical energy, gravitational potential energy, heat energy, sound energy, light energy, mechanical energy, electrical energy, Law of Conservation of Energy, Energy Transformation

2. Understandig Energy

  What is Energy?

Energy is everywhere. It is present in the massive, sudden expansion of heated air that booms across the sky as thunder. It is present when a spark inside an engine ignites the fuel-air mix, creating the explosion that makes a car go. It is present when you turn on you laptop or your tablet. It is even present as your eyes scan these words, and your brain makes meaning of these sentences.

So what is it? To begin to answer this question, let's watch the following video. As you watch, keep these questions in your mind:

   THINK

  1. What are kinetic and potential energy, and the relationship between them?

  2. What is meant when we say 'energy is neither created nor destroyed?'

  3. How would I define energy?
